    • About the City

Hamburg is a city on the water. Second only to Berlin in terms of size and population, the city of Hamburg is home to some of the largest harbours in Europe. Due to its many waterways and canals, it is often referred to as the “Venice of the North”.

The Alster, a sizeable lake in the middle of Hamburg, makes this such a desirable place to live. Apart from water, there are many facets that give the city its distinct character, such as the high-end historic residences in Elbchaussee and the white-painted houses in Havesthude.

After London and New York, Hamburg is the next most vibrant city for catching a musical, concert or show (it is known by many as the ‘Broadway of Germany’). The opening of Elbphilharmonie in 2017 is further testament to Hamburg’s reputation as a world-class destination for international visitors.
